Looking Back...

Christmas is over...
Heck, 2016 is over!  How did THAT happen so fast?
So as I sit here in that week that lies between what was
and what is... I look back as well as looking forward.
And I figure I had a so-so year.
So many "home projects" I never got to...
...but so many I DID get to!
Health issues arose I never had before...
...but medicines controlled it, and I've only slowed a little.
I spent 3 days in a hospital for the first time ever...
...but I still didn't spend any time in jail for anything.
Granddaughter Katy got married here at our house...
.... but the muscle soreness from all the work beforehand only lasted 2 days.
Gardening was a "BUST" due to the drought...
...but time away allowed me to work on my barn/shop.
I didn't really do any traveling to exotic places...
...but we DID get 3 days alone in the mountains!
Had to put up with a years worth of political junk...
...which is rapidly winding down, thank goodness!
So yeah, 2016 was the pits in some ways...
but it was great in other ways!
Thank you God for all of it!

The Holiday Season

Thanksgiving!  I ate too much!!
Church group's Christmas party this weekend.  I ate too much!
Attended a "wine tasting" party too.  I ate too much!
Hmmm.... starting to see a pattern....
And now we wait for the Christmas celebrations!

THIS Sunday, covered dish luncheon at church...
NEXT Sunday, my family gathers here at our home to eat...
The NEXT Sunday is Christmas...
Ohhhhh.... I'm in trouble.

Time Out For Leaf Watching

Yeah, I'm one of those people.  I like the Fall.
I like the changing of the leaves.  And I like riding mountain roads.
So this past weekend, the Mrs. and I took a trip to the North Georgia mountains,
and stayed in Blue Ridge, GA.
Part of our weekend was the train ride along the Toccoa River over to Copperhill, TN.

Updating the Garden Shed

Some 20-odd years ago, I moved a small barn to my property.
As I worked, and cleared the land, it became my "work shed."
Then, as home construction took place, it was a "storage pile."
But once we moved in, it became the true garden shed
it was meant to be, and has been ever since 1994.
But now... the old girl is falling down.
Remember that deck I tore off earlier this year?
Those planks (weathered and mildewed black) are now the new siding!!
In this picture, those below the window are replaced already.
And the project is now finished, except for cleaning up,
and hauling off some of the old buckets and trash.
Should last another 30 or 40 years now!!

How Many Years?

Sorry I haven't posted in a while...
Lots of work to be done around here before Winter arrives.
But.... we DID take a night out to attend our ....
Oh my, where did THOSE years get to so fast?

Recycling An Old Door

Took a break this week from the daily routine
to have some creative fun with an old DOOR....
And I do mean OLD.... got it from an old house built in 1840.
I've been saving it--in my barn--for more than 20 years,
just to fulfill this little need.
Notice the old rusted hinges, the black CUT square nails...
But I had to cut it down to the right size...
and round off the corners, and sand off the old paint.
(I left the end showing on the left... it had some "critter's"
chewing marks where they had tried to get under the door!
And the two holes by the sander are where the old door knob
and skeleton key lock were located.)

Today I added the legs, and relocated the new TABLE
to our screened porch.
Next step will be staining the top,
and putting a coat of polyurethane on it... next week.
I love this kind of stuff!

Morning Surprise

Despite our HEAT wave here in the South,
the mornings have been very nice lately.
So I've gotten up early, grabbed my coffee, and enjoyed the
peaceful mornings on our porch swing.
This morning, as the sun was rising, a flock of geese came
by to say "hello"... sure made me yearn even more for Fall.

"Free Range" Chickens

I guess "free range" means they can go anywhere!
And she DID lay her egg right there on the lawn mower!

The Little Surprises

Those following along, know I'm "rebuilding" my barn.
This holiday weekend will be a working weekend for me
as I continue to turn the haybarn into a workshop.
Found one little small surprise I had forgotten about.
One of my old coffee cups... been in the barn for over 20 years!
Nice to pause and enjoy the little things....

Muscadine JELLY

Remember those muscadines from my earlier post?
Well, we spent the afternoon making jelly!
Picked a good gallon...
Then cut, and mashed, and removed the seeds...

Then strained all the juices out, discarding the hulls...

Then cooked the juices, with sugar and pectin added...

And VOILA!!  Muscadine jelly!!  Oh soooo good!!

Making Progress...Slowly

It's been a while since I've posted about my "barn" remodel.
But I'm still at it, and making slow progress.
But progress, none-the-less!
Front half of 24' x 40' building is now cleaned out,
and a new block foundation put under it.
Will be "turning the corner" in another week!

Pretty Is...As Pretty Does

Noticed how pretty these crepe myrtles were today along my fence.
Love them!

Ignoring The Garden

This year my garden has been a bust!
Everything pretty much dried up, and died.
I did get the tomato plants up and going, but the fruit
never developed into more than a golf ball size.
And the taste wasn't good at all.
I've NEVER had this kind of season...
drought is the worst, rabbits & armadillos nibbling
what DOES start growing, and just overall BAD
for everything.
>Fall soil prep is key... tilling in the lime
>Fall gathering of leaves is critical
for composting and for mulching later
>Putting down that mulch when the plants come up!
And I'm already dreaming about next year!!

Vacation Bible School

So now that we are full-fledged adults,
VBS has taken on a whole bunch of new adventures.
Now, I get to help decorate, build sets, paint cardboard,
and cut out lots of different shapes!
So here is this year's effort.
All decorated one week before the big kickoff!
I do believe we are ready!!

Blueberry Time

Even with the drought here at my place
(and it is officially a "SEVERE" drought,
according to our local weather forecasters),
somehow my blueberry bushes have provided a few berries.
But they are loaded!  And if rain comes, I may get more!
Today we picked about 2 quarts.
I figure that's really good considering....
The garden?  Well, it's done for.  A few struggling tomatoes,
and that's it.   So we'll eat blueberries!

"Restructuring The Barn" Project

Even with this unbearable HEAT, I still have projects to do.
So up early this morning--when it was only 80--and out to the barn.
A few weeks ago, I put in a cement block wall in the first section.
Today I "rebuilt" the wall framing for that section.
I added a door.  And also had to "relocate" that electric box.
The entire section is 10 feet long, and there are 4 to do.
It was HOT!  I was Sweating!  And I broke my glasses!
But I did get this part finished before lunch time.
And after lunch I just rested in the A/C....

We're Having A Heat Wave

Georgia is in a drought already for 2016 !
Well, middle Georgia, anyway.
Well, MY little area to be more precise!
Rain passes by... just to the North... just to the South.
But nothing here to even wet the ground.
And my garden is dying!
I've watered... and watered... but that's just keeping it alive.
Not enough to really boost the growth.
Here are my cucumbers... and they were planted end of May.
Two little blossoms appeared, and then dried up.
I've threatened to plow the entire garden under, and replant when the rainy season gets here.
Crossing my fingers.  And praying for a little rain.

Another Side-Bar

Seems like I just get sooooo busy that I forget about my blog.
Ok, we all are aware of that!
Among all the "outside" chores, I do get other things done.
And one of them is helping do our home-canning.
So this canning season starts off with one of my favorites--PEACH PRESERVES.
Jars were sterilized...
Peaches cooked... and cooked...
And finally, jars filled, and processed, and ready for the table!

Wrestling With The Azaleas

I've been at it for a week now... pruning back our Azaleas.
They were way over SEVEN FEET tall in places.
And one half of them were invaded by Honeysuckle vines.
So it was time.
Here's an "almost done" view from today.
And here is ME amidst those "near the end"...
Sweaty, windblown, and almost defeated... but NO!
I will remain strong!!
(Notice those on the right... above the railings... and I'm SIX FEET tall)

STOP! And smell the ....

...Asian Lillies.
They are beautiful...and more about to open!
So even with all the work going on, I do take time to enjoy the little things.

Entering The Garden

From my back yard (proper) I have not had a good entrance to the garden area,
which is fenced in by itself.
So a while back I found this vintage garden gate....
And now I have an entrance that leads right down the middle pathway,
straight to the gazebo covered in jasmine.
Now to get it all cleaned up, spit-and-polished,
with flowers brightening up the entry way.

Signs Of Goodness

Today I walked thru my garden, and then out to my fruit trees.
It was so wonderful to see the trees actually having something on them this year.  In years past, late frosts, birds, squirrels, and a host of other things have prevented ANY fruit harvest.
But this year... so far... this year looks promising!

Azalea Pruning

It's been a few years since I've REALLY pruned my azaleas.
OMG... they've grown 2 FEET above my porch railings.
When we sit on the swing, we can no longer see the street.
Well, this year is the year.
It's slowwww going, but it IS going...
Wrapping up one side of the house here.
Next will be the front.  Ugh!!

Working On That Barn Lean-To

Yep, I've been away from posting...
I've been busy in the garden, AND putting a tin roof on my lean-to addition to my barn.
This will be the new parking spot for my tractor.
FINISHED nailing the tin today!!

Darn Crows !!!!!!!!

Went out to check on the garden this morning...
counted over 60 ... yes SIXTY... snap bean seedlings pulled up.
And there were some peas also, and some squash... although not as bad.
So I replanted, and then installed the SCARECROW....
Ooooo.... they'll be sorry now!!  Or scared, maybe!!

Wednesday, May 4, 2016

Oh, It's SPROUTING Time!!

All of my recently planted seeds are spouting!!
Pushing their way through the dirt, reaching for that sunshine!
Come on, little seedlings, come on!

Veggies In The Ground!

One long week of working the beds clean,
and getting the seeds (and plants) in the ground.
Now for a good "watering in" to help the seeds germinate.

Monday, April 25, 2016

Phase One Complete

Well, got all 10 of the beds laid out, and turned over.
Next will be one more tilling of each, and then the planting!

To The Gardening!

The time has arrived when my thoughts can turn to dirt!
The garden dirt, that is!
Just as years past, I will have 10 beds (2 in each row).
Each bed will be approximately 30 feet x 4 feet.
Today was DAY# 1... laying out the beds.

It's A "Done Deal"

The big day arrived and all went superb.
Here the Mrs. and I are with granddaughter, Katy,
and her new husband, Paul.
Now comes the "happy ever after" part.
(And that old gazebo cleaned up pretty good, don't you think?)

The FLOWERS Arrived

Today, the flowers arrived...
.... and lights were hung inside the tent.
Tomorrow is here already!

Wedding = Chores!

With the wedding here at the house coming up,
there were a thousand things that the Mrs. and I felt needed to be done.
Now that we're down to the wire, the list has narrowed dramatically!
 (some things completed, some re-prioritized)
Good thing I had this little "helper" working with me!

The Big Day Is Drawing Closer

100+ people???  hmmmm....

All Work... And No Play

Sorry I haven't been on much lately.  I've been busy.
Got a wedding here at the house in 8 days!
One big project that's been very demanding was tearing off
the back deck, and also replacing the back steps.
This picture was a few days ago when I got those rebuilt.
Spent all of today building the handrails... well, and also moving some of the old lumber from the deck.
Anyway, finally see the finishing point coming... maybe this weekend... on this major project.
Once everything is built, PAINTING.  And then setting out a few bushes, and cutting the grass.

Spring Has Sprung!

Guess it's official here in the South. Spring has sprung!
Easter came early, and brought our Spring with it.
Dogwoods and Red Bud trees blooming.  Flowers everywhere!
And now, just a week (or so) later, our Azaleas have opened.
And they are gorgeous!!  Enjoying every minute of it!!

She Completes Me...

Dated for 3 years....
Married today for 49 years....
And she still LIKES me too!   Hard to believe, isn't it?!
And our favorite place to celebrate has become Red Lobster!
Cheddar Cheese biscuits, and their awesome Shrimp Trio
(3 kinds of shrimp--delicious)!  Oh yeah, and a few veggies.
Yes, we took a bunch home too!!
