Family News Today

I've been busy this week with the push mower and the tractor... both were cutting grass!  So today was some more of the same, and I thought at least once today, "what am I going to post about today?"   And then we got this wonderful news.....

Our oldest granddaughter, Katy, was proposed to today by her boyfriend of 1 1/2 years, Paul Snyder.  Paul's a great guy, and we're excited to welcome him into our family.  I'm so very thankful that her son, my little buddy, Gavin, has already established a good relationship with him as well.  So today, that's my good news, and I'm proud to share it with the world.

Taking Another Walk

Just getting settled from our weekend get-away, and of course, I always like to get outside and just "walk around."  This is a picture of my garden taken from the back yard GATE going into the garden. I do enjoy just walking and dreaming, and this gate just gives me fuel for thought.... you too, maybe?

This long walkway leads to the natural gazebo in the "center" of my little acre!  Just to the left are my blueberries (about 40 plants);  then a long vine/trellis of black muscadines also on the left;  and on the right is a long vine/trellis of golden scuppernongs;   then the fruit orchard bringing the rear, and you can see my blooming peach trees there in the center (pink blossoms).  The orchard also includes figs, pears, apples, pomegranites, and cherries.  And THAT my friends is what I do in my "spare time."

Anniversary Get-Away

On March 24th the Mrs. and I will celebrate 48 years of wedded bliss--to each other!  And that's a truly wonderful milestone!   As we have done for sooooo many years, we managed once again to get away from the routine and sneak off for a little honeymooning.  We haven't managed to do that as often in the last few years as we did back when I was WORKING for a living, but we were able to scrape together enough retirement funds for a short little trip.  This year we chose to ride up to Asheville, North Carolina for a few days.  We walked the hills and valleys in the streets in town, being the little "shopping tourists" in the historic downtown area (and there were HUNDREDS of little artsy shops everywhere!).  But it didn't take us long to figure out those long hills, covered with soooooo many people bumping shoulders at every turn, just wasn't for us.  It was interesting, and lots of cute things in the shops, but we jumped in the car and escaped for an afternoon cruising along the Blue Ridge Parkway (top speed 45mph).  We stopped at the "welcome center" and also a "folk art exhibition center" along the parkway, and those were a lot more interesting to us.  All in all, we chalked this trip up as another great little get-away, and came back with just a few pictures to remember the occasion.   If you look closely at this one, you can see the tiny houses 3,000+ feet below us on the valley floor.  And some guy was burning rubbish in his back yard!

Planting Season, That's Why!

Ok, so I haven't been on here posting lately.  Like my last post said, I got Spring Fever, and I got it bad.  Actually, it has been in the mid-70(F)'s, and even low 80(F)'s all this week!!  And like any good southern boy that likes to plant a garden would do, I got out there and got to work!   I got all of my beds tilled, and READY!   Of course, tomorrow we're back in the 50(F)'s and rain for two solid days, but then over the weekend and next week, right back in the 70(F)'s.... So I'm on the ready, and standing by.  I will NOT plant until after Easter though... I've learned THAT lesson!  But as it stands right now, I'll probably begin my planting about mid-April--and that is seeds as well as setting out my tomatoes.  I'm excited, can you tell?

Spring Has Arrived

I try not to get too excited too early, but this "seems" to be one of those years where Spring teases, and just teases more, and more, until one day we realize, "OH.. IT'S HERE!!"  Well I do believe it has arrived.  Rain tonight and tomorrow, but temps have been in the 60-70F range all week... and next week is already forecasting 70's.... All of my flowers are beginning to bloom, as well as my PEACH TREES!  And of course, flowering trees and bushes are blooming all over town.  And the other reason I know for sure Spring is here... the "POLLEN COUNT" was reported on the news last night as "extremely high."  So we're off and running... I plan to start preparing the garden spot next week!!

Random Acts of Kindness

This picture is from an internet "photo stock" library.  But I thought it pretty much served as a good one to close out the final week (officially) of Random Acts of Kindness, hosted by Betsy Brock over at My Five Men.  It's been great reading all the neat things people have done.  And this photo also brings me to my attempt of kindness for this week.

A gentleman and his wife were on a sidewalk at the end of a Kroger Grocery shopping mall.  His sign simply said, "lost my job... need food for my family."   I stopped as I was leaving the parking area, and gave him some money.  However, I'd like to point out an even LARGER act of kindness that I witnessed there just before I drove up to him.  A woman pulled her car up alongside the couple, talked for just a bit, and his wife got in the car with her.  She drove through the parking lot, and stopped in a spot in front of the grocery store.  There she proceeded to walk inside with the woman.  I can only assume from what I saw, that the lady in the car did not want to donate money, but instead offered to take her directly to the grocery store and buy them some food.  I did not see them leave, so I do not know that for sure, but I will go with my imagination on this one, and my gut feeling.  I am a person full of hope that this world still has wonderful people in it willing to help out anyone in need.  And I like to think that I, too, am one of those.

Spring Fever!

After a month of cold temperatures, and being "chilled to the bone," we have finally been blessed with a couple of warm days in a row, with the sun shining brightly overhead.. Yesterday, a balmy 70F degrees.... today 72F degrees when I took this picture... but it made it all the way to 78F degrees!  Wooo hoooo..... I'm feeling the need to PLANT MY GARDEN!!!
