TREE Shopping.... And Then.....

We were invited to join our granddaughter, her boyfriend, and little Gavin this morning for an outing to one of our local Christmas Tree farms.  We met them and drove around the entire area, finally parked and moved in for closer inspection of the trees closest to us.  Gavin took off in a dash, exclaiming he would find one.

Some 30 minutes later, he finally DID settle on one that wasn't bad at all, and it was cut and taken to the checkout area.

After loading it in their truck, they headed directly home where it was immediately put up, and the decorating began.  Myself, the Mrs., our daughter, and granddaughter, however, headed on up the highway a bit for lunch at Burger King.  And I enjoyed that greatly!  The Whopper is my favorite!  After lunch, I was coerced into a shopping trip.... "can we stop by the store?"   Yep.  A female shopping trip:   One store.... one hour.   Second store.... Another hour.  And there was no fast walking involved anywhere in those two hours.  Snail pace at best.   Finally, with just a few items in our carts, we checked out, and headed for home.  And here I sit now as I unwind and relax from the day.  I really DO love Christmas though.  Really, I do.

Basking In The After-glow...

Leftovers.  It's probably the only time during the year I really ENJOY leftovers.  So I've done my part in making sure they are consumed within a reasonable period.

And... I even ventured out for just a bit this afternoon and braved a mini-shopping trip.  Hahaha... but nothing major... and I avoided the hectic crowds too.
Man shopping:
1. drive to the store
2.  park and go in
3.  get what you were after
4.  pay, head back to the car
5.  drive directly home
..... 15 minutes tops!!

Can't Believe I Ate The Whole Thang!

I love Thanksgiving.  Great food, great family, great time!  Today was no exception as we entertained 30 or so family members here at our home.  Everyone brought their favorite side dishes--casseroles, turnip greens, pinto beans, potato salad, and others--and we provided the turkey and dressing.

And the dessert table was filled to capacity with pecan pies, sweet potato pies, pumpkin pies, a cherry dump cake, some peach cobbler, an orange cake, and a chocolate cake.  I tried some of each!

And the afternoon was filled with eating, visiting, "catching up", walking around the yards, eating, watching TV, and eating some more.

But before long,  all was finished and everyone left to go home.  And I'm left smiling and content.  It was a good day.

Did I Say I Love Red?

THE MRS...... The red-head that keeps me being me!  She's been with me for a very long, long, long time.... and still wants to keep hanging around.   I'm happy!

Love The Red

Looking from my kitchen window this morning, with the gray cloudy skies looming overhead, there was a nice "bright spot" outside.... my blueberry bushes!   Their Fall color is absolutely beautiful.

AND they frame up my old gardening shed quite nicely, don't you think?

The BIG WEEK.....

Well, it's here!  Our "big" holiday week.  Today we'll be cleaning up the place.... you know... picking up little things that have been left stacked here and there.... dusting those places that were "skipped" during the routine cleaning....putting away things that should have been put away weeks ago.  You know... that kind of day today.   And Tuesday will be last minute shopping.   And Wednesday will be the "prep day" to begin getting everything in order for the "big day," and fine-tuning anything that was left undone.  And Thursday... Thanksgiving Day.  The Mrs. will be up and beginning her cooking for the morning.  I'll be up, trying to prepare breakfast amidst all the upheaval going on.  But somehow, every year we make it through, and around 1:00, her family begins arriving.  This year we are expecting about 40...yes, FORTY... for Thanksgiving lunch!!  I know... CRAZY!!   But for now, today, we are excited as we look forward to this family tradition that's become such a part of us.  And now our kids.   And their kids.  I Love it!

"Black Gold.... "

I was out mulching more leaves this afternoon.  I was hoping to get them all finished today before the rain comes in tomorrow, but THAT didn't happen.  One delay was emptying out my half-full compost bin so I would have somewhere to put the new leaves.  And I just had to take a picture of my naturally made, dark BLACK compost.  No much there but rotting leaves from the year before!!

Wheelbarrow after wheelbarrow load was taken to one of the empty garden beds and dumped there.  Next week, when I have some time, I'll rake it down level, and then till it all in nice and neat.  Oh, and I found about 50 grub-worms in there too.. nice and fat.  My chicken, "Girlie," enjoyed every one I took her.  Maybe she'll reward me with an egg this week! (She's not been laying lately.  Maybe the cold weather.)

Friday: A Day In The Life....

This morning I was at the gym bright and early... well... 8:30 anyway!  By then I had already been out and about since 6:30 (on a FRIDAY!!),  cooked breakfast for myself and 2 of the 3 ladies in our house!   Sorry about the smudges on the mirror!!  Actually you're getting an "accidental selfie."  I wasn't ready, and didn't review it for a second and better chance... what you see is what you get today!

AND THEN.... home in time to watch little great-grandson for a little bit.  He had a "sleep-over" at "Pa's house," and he must have slept great because he was running wide open today!!  And as always, Pa had to build him a train track around the living room with his Thomas and Friends trains.  He's got a pile of them too.  (This was taken before the "extra" pieces in the middle were picked up--I stopped to grab my cell phone camera!)

AND THEN..... after lunch I had a whole bunch of leaves to get up!  I chose--this year--to not rake them, but to go ahead and mulch them with my bagger/mulching mower.  It sure went a whole lot faster than last year too!   I've still got three huge pecan trees to do, as well as four big oak trees.  Don't know where I'm going to put them all.  Today's effort filled up one of my two compost bins.  The other one is not going to hold all I have to put in there either!!

                                                                                                 ~THE END~

Family Finds

The Mrs. and I have been doing family research (genealogy) since the 70's I think... we were inspired to begin back when "Roots" was shown on TV.  And it's been a journey ever since.  Granted I'm not digging every single day or week on things, but it's always in the back of my mind somewhere.  These past two years, along with digging up the old dead people's stories, I realized--after one of my family reunions--that I knew more about those "old" generations of people than I did my 1st and 2nd cousins living today!  What does THAT say about all of us?  ('Cause I'm sure you're just as bad as me on that.)  Anyway, I grew up very close to my Mom's family, and I've been filling in those blanks all of the last year or so.  THIS year I vowed to get to know more of my Dad's family.  For some reason we were never really "close" to them... I knew his brothers names, and some of his sisters, and remember meeting most of them at least once in my life, but that's about it.  Never knew but a handful of cousins.  So my point to all of this, is once I start making those new acquaintances, all of a sudden new things start coming out.  And new PICTURES start showing up for me to copy and share.  Like this rare find of one of my uncles (my Dad's brother) and supposedly his son.  I never knew he even had a son!!  So there!   That's what I'm talking about.  I find that the more I discover, the more I want to keep digging.  Not that I'm expecting to find any skeleton's in anybody's closet (or wanting to).   I just think it's fascinating stuff!  Sure does make me wish I had really TALKED to them back when I had the chance.  Especially my grandparents.  And what better way is there to spend a cold wintery day?

Southern Freeze!

Ok... enough already!  We are---like the rest of our nation---in the midst of our SECOND artic blast of freezing weather.  And this is still November!  This morning our temps here on my porch were in the teens!   EIGHTEEN to be exact.  And now that we've had a good freeze, let's get back to the temps we are use to around here.  Just heard on the news this morning it will be near 70F on Sunday!   Nothing like living here in Georgia.  Freezing on Monday and Tuesday, T-Shirts and shorts by the weekend.  Break out the flip-flops and suntanning oils!!

A Musical Day

With all the "work" things I seem to always be doing around the house, and then trying to help out others here and there as well, I stay very busy.  Sunday's are no exception.  Being a music minister at a small Baptist church makes my Sunday pretty much a "work day."  But since I am totally consumed and passionate about music, it never feels like a work day at all.... until the day is over, and it's 9:00 in the evening, and I can hardly keep my eyes open!   But I love what I do.  And right now--well for the last two months--we have been rehearsing for our Christmas program.  Christmas music every Sunday night.  And last night---well, last night was awesome!   Choir is singing out much better, songs are coming together,  winding down on "new" songs being added, and now really beginning to get some of them polished and shined and ready to present on December 14th.  I'm already beyond excited!!  Can you tell?

A Day of Helping

Busy day today... again!  I guess I just need to stop saying that, and only mention how the day is going when it is NOT busy.  Anyway, the day turned out to be a day of "helping" other people, and that's always a good feeling.   First, I delivered our covered dish for the meal at the church today for our dearly departed friend's family after the funeral.  Circumstances for today would not allow either of us to attend the actual funeral services, and that's why we visited with the family last night during the viewing hours.

After that, on to the second thing today, and that was to help my brother replace his blown hot water heater.  I've done a couple of those, and thought I might be of assistance to him.  As soon as I walked into the laundry room, however, I could tell it was beyond my knowledge and ability.  It was plumbed with copper pipe, 100%, from floor to top of the heater.  I did not have the tools for that, nor the know-how.  After some head-scratching, we finally decided to go over to the hardware store and get a new one so that it would be there for the person that WAS going to do the replacement.  The store got him all confused, and he ended up not buying anything today, but decided to just wait until the repairman was there so he could get what he needed.  When it was all said and done, it was a nice visit with my brother, and we spent a lot of time talking and catching up on things, over lunch at McDonalds.  And I got a call late this afternoon, and my younger brother--the plumber!--was going to come on Saturday and bail us out!  So I guess the day turned out just fine!

Reclaiming The Old Me

Yes, I still remember the "good old days" of a young, solidly built muscular 19-year old football player.   Here I was 6'1" weighing in at 195 lbs!  All muscle!   We all .... yes ALL... yearn for those "glory days."  I can proudly say I have always kept in pretty good shape... sometimes by hard work, sometimes by accident, and sometimes just because of my genes.  But it's been nice.  However, over the years, age caught up with me, and I got lazy at exercising, and keeping myself disciplined.  Somewhere along the way I also fell in love with a huge bowl full of ice cream every night at 9:00.  Something snapped me to my senses back in August.  Don't know what it was, but I'm glad it did.  I joined a local gym to begin the task of RECLAIMING THE OLD ME!   I also vowed to make some "life changes".... NOT a diet by any stretch of the imagination... but just make some changes.   I immediately stopped the ice cream at night.  And I have NOT had another bowl since then either.   Today I am down 20 pounds!!  Small victory, but a victory non-the-less. I'm encouraged.  I'm continuing the reclaiming!

Crazy Day

Ever have one of those days?  YEP!  Today was my turn!

And then I spent hours...HOURS... trying to get this new blog up and running correctly.  So here it is!   Now, if I can only write stuff for it..... Or take pictures for it.   So here's one for today:

My 2014 garden is now put to rest for the winter.  (Except for those few green collard greens on the left... we're still picking and eating those.)   And from the weather reports, it seems I got this all finished just in the nick of time to avoid me being out there in 30F-degree temps!!

A Beautiful Sunday Afternoon

Blue skies, Fall temperatures.... just my kind of afternoon!  I got outside and walked around a little bit after church this morning.  Snapped this picture looking over my fence into my now finished garden. I've already got visions of next year happening!   BUT... I must wait.  Relaxxxxx.... waiiiiitttt
